The French pharmaceutical group Sanofi-Aventis
submitted the new anti obesity drug Acomplia to regulators for marketing
approval. It is believed that the sale of Acomplia drug which can
also help patients quit smoking can exceed $ 3 billion.
The pharmacy group was created by Sanofi-Synthelabo
after the takeover of Aventis last August. Though Sanofi was closed
on giving more information about Acomplia, it did announce that
the company would move four of its drugs to the third phase of clinical
trials next year. Acomplia also faces competition from other key
obesity drug manufacturers. The new drug is expected to be launched
in 2006.
