Diet drug Acomplia permitted for Sale in Switzerland
5 April 2007
Diet drug Acomplia (rimonabant)
has been given permission for sale in Switzerland for the treatment
of obese or overweight patients with at least one type of associated
cardiovascular ailment.
Sanofi-Aventis, the firm manufacturing Acomplia, said Swiss medic
authorized the use of the Acomplia for obese patients whose body
mass index (BMI) are greater than 30 or for overweight patients
whose body mass index (BMI) are over 27 with at least one associated
cardiovascular risk factor. The other condition is that they should
have tried weight reduction that should have failed.
The approval by Switzerland is akin to the EU marketing approval
that was cleared last June, where the drug was cleared for use in
conjunction with diet and exercise for overweight and obese patients
with linked health risks such as type 2 diabetes.
The recent disappointment faced by the firm with France and Germany's
policy on reimbursements will not be eased by the clearance of Acomplia
in Switzerland, which is a small country.
