France to Reimburse only Obese Patients with type
2 Diabetics for Acomplia
March 22, 2007
France will now reimburse only obese people with type-2-diabetics
for buying diet drug Acomplia, and that too, not even the full amount.
They will be eligible for only 35 percent of the amount.
According to Sanofi, reimbursement for Acomplia in France is only
for obese patients with type 2 diabetes whose disease are not properly
treated by the standard diabetic drugs like sulfonylurea or metformin.
Sanofi said these conditions were published in official journal
and according to it; doctors must first try other diabetic treatments
available and must put the patient on a special diet program and
physical workouts.
This reimbursement condition is seen as a major blow to Sanofi,
who had similar setback in Germany too, where its application for
reimbursement of Acomplia was totally rejected.
However, the firm said Acomplia
will be available in France for 71.63 euros, including tax, for
28-days.
