Acomplia can help control blood sugar and blood fat
June 12, 2006
A recent study reveals that the weight loss pill Acomplia not only
helps obese people with type 2 diabetes lose weight and reduce waist
size, but also helps them control blood sugar and blood fats.
The report was presented by lead researcher Dr. André Scheen,
head of diabetes at the University of Liège in Belgium, and
colleagues at a June 11th poster session during the annual scientific
meeting of the American Diabetes Association.
The results from the RIO-Diabetes trial -- a phase III trial in
which 1,045 people with type 2 diabetes either took one of two fixed-dose
regimens of rimonabant or a placebo -- attracted far less attention
this year than the initial presentation got last year.
In the latest briefing on trial results, the researchers said Acomplia's
beneficial effect on blood sugars and fats for diabetics went 57
percent beyond what could be explained by weight loss alone.
"These findings support the use of [Acomplia] for reducing
cardiometabolic risk in patients with type 2 diabetes, and show
that the benefits achieved are additional to those of background
oral antidiabetic therapy," Scheen reported.
