Acomplia can be used to combat cardiovascular disease
March 20, 2006
According to the research unveiled in Atlanta by
the American College of Cardiology in a conference it has been discovered
that Sanofi Aventis' drug rimonabant, branded as Acomplia, can be
used to combat cardiovascular disease by suppressing patients' appetite,
helping them lose weight as abdominal fat is considered a significant
risk factor for heart disease. Studies have shown that Acomplia
helps lower cholesterol, even in patients who do not lose weight.
Acomplia works on the same pathways in the body
that gives marijuana users the "munchies," the urgent
need to eat but reduce appetite rather than boosting it. Conference
delegates also debated new research highlighting worrying risks
associated with drug-coated stents - tiny devices used to open up
blocked arteries. Drug-coated stents generally carry less risk of
the vessel closing up again soon after surgery, but it now appears
they increase patients' risk of potentially fatal blood clots.
