Japanese government takes initiative to fight childhood obesity

November 06, 2005

The Japanese government has taken initiative to fight obesity in children. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan have decided to tackle this growing problem by promoting healthy diets. The ministry is planning to designate 10 districts in five prefectures as model areas in the year 2006. In these selective areas, it'll try to minimize the number of overweight children with the help and support of schools, households and communities.

Japan is facing the problem of obesity because unhealthy foods available in the country are cheaper as compared to the healthy ones. Inactive lifestyle is another most prominent reason behind the rise of this dreaded disease. Though Japanese diet is considered a healthy one but the fact is that the kids of this country are more attracted towards fast foods and confectionaries.

Kids in Japan spend most of their extra time by watching TV and playing computer games. They're less likely to go to parks or perform outdoor activities. Weekend trips are also not a regular feature of their lives. The reasons mentioned above have contributed to the rise of obesity particularly in children so the step taken by the Japanese government will be of great help in this regard.
