Diet drug acomplia launched in more EU countries and still hoped for US launch in 2006

On October 5th Sanofi-Aventis has declared that the diet pill Acomplia will be continuing in Europe. The diet drug is now also available in seven European countries.

According to a spokesperson after the first launch of the acomplia in late June in the United Kingdom recently Acomplia has been launched in Germany, Denmark, Norway, Ireland, Finland and Austria.

Sanofi has announced that Acomplia will be available in all the major European countries within the next nine months but not too many additional launches are expected to take place before the end of the year.

In June the European Union has been approved for the marketing of the acomplia in all member countries but the approval of sale to consumers differ from one European country to another.

According to a Sanofi spokesman they are in a constant discussion with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) about Acomplia which will be marketed as Zimulti in the U.S. There will be no changes in statement of Sanofi which was given on Aug. 2nd.

According to Hanspeter Spek, head of pharmaceutical operations Sanofi is still hopeful and confident about the approval of Acomplia for sale in United States before the end of this year.

Doug Greene said “Sanofi started selling Acomplia in the U.K. in June and has been speaking to doctors and patients in the U.K., Germany and a couple other European countries where the drug is now on sale.”
