Zimulti is the New Name for Diet Drug Acomplia for
U.S. market
4 April 2007
Finally Sanofi-Aventis, developer of Acomplia (Rimonabant), has
come up with a new name Zimulti for Acomplia for the US market.
Though, the drug is still stuck at the FDA for its approval.
However, Acomplia is already up for grab in various European nations,
Argentina and in Mexico.
The FDA advisory panel is expected to air the positive and negative
effects of According on June 13th. According to the meeting notice
published by the FDA Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory
Committee, it seemed it might make it clear suggestions made by
some of Sanofi's financial analysts that the FDA may now approve
Acomplia / Zimulti for treatment of type 2 diabetes.
According to the report, the FDA would consider Rimonabant as an
addition to diet and exercise for controlling obesity in people
with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 30, or a body
mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 27 if they are suffering
from at least one cardiovascular ailment.
It doesn't look like a treatment for diabetes nor does it indicates
as a treatment for metabolic syndrome.
There is also one question related with the US insurers whether
they will agree to pay for the diet drug if FDA approves obesity
management.
While German state insurance system has rejected reimbursing patients
terming Acomplia as a life-style drug whereas the France has agreed
to provide some coverage only for obese patients who also have inadequately
controlled type 2 diabetes.
