Rimonabant in Obesity Program
Rimonabant, a wonder drug discovered and developed
by French pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis, is a new age drug
currently showing immense promise in the field of the treatment
of obesity and other related metabolic risk factors such as smoking.
Rimonabant (which will be brought to market as
Acomplia) is an experimental wonder drug which will help obese people
lose weight, quit smoking and also help in protecting the heart.
Trials of the drug have shown that 33% of people on Rimonabant lost
10% of body weight and kept their weight down for two years which
is a record as no other diet drug has managed to keep a person's
weight down for so long.
Apart from keeping a person lean and slim, the magical diet drug
also helps a person quit the smoking habit. This will be of great
interest for many smokers who are afraid to give up because they
say they will put on loads of weight if they do so. Studies have
shown that people were able to quit and stay off cigarettes significantly
better on rimonabant and also not gain all that weight that generally
happens when a person normally quits smoking.
According to studies, there are nerve receptors that exist in the
brain and fat cells. These receptors tell the body to overeat (and
intake nicotine). Rimonabant
blocks the signals of these receptors and stops them from telling
us to overeat. Overeaters and addicted smokers have very active
receptors of this kind. So, by blocking the signals, the overeater
or nicotine addict does not have the same urge to eat or smoke.
There is no other drug like rimonabant that can help you stop smoking
and overeating. Therefore once approved, it's going to rule the
drug market for the multiple benefits associated with it.
